A Path Reclaimed: Seema’s Journey Back to the Classroom

Seema* is a 14-years-old girl from the village located in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. Growing up, she was known as a bright and promising student who took great pride in her studies. However, the course of her life changed abruptly in 2022, when she was only 10-years-old and in Grade 5.

A tragic road accident took the life of her father, the sole breadwinner of the family. His sudden passing left Seema’s mother, two sisters, brother, and grandmother in a state of deep emotional and financial crisis. To keep the household running, Seema’s mother began working as a laborer during the day and taking on sewing work in the evening. With the family’s resources stretched thin and the nearest school located five kilometers away, education began to feel like an impossible luxury. Seema eventually stopped attending school to stay home and support her mother with domestic responsibilities.

Nearly three years passed, but Seema’s desire to learn remained unchanged. In 2025, she was identified as a dropout during a door-to-door survey conducted by Educate Girls. When the Field Coordinator visited her home, the family’s struggles were evident. Her mother shared the weight of their financial reality and the difficulty of the long commute to school, while Seema expressed her quiet but firm wish to return to her books.

Through consistent dialogue and community engagement, supported by Apraava Energy, the team worked to help the family see that education was the most sustainable way to secure Seema’s future. They addressed the practical barriers and provided the encouragement the family needed to reconsider. After some time, their persistence led to a significant milestone when Seema was successfully re-enrolled in Grade 8.

The return to school was not without its challenges. After years away from a desk, Seema initially felt a sense of hesitation and doubt. However, with the steady support of her teachers and Educate Girls’ field team, she slowly regained her confidence. Her regular attendance and determination soon began to show in her academic performance. Seema recently passed her Grade 8 exams with an ‘A grade’ and is now continuing her education in Grade 9.

Seema is once again a learner. Inspired by those who helped her find her way back, she now dreams of becoming a teacher so she can help other children understand the importance of staying in school. Her story serves as a reminder that with the right guidance and collective support, even the most difficult circumstances can be overcome, allowing girls like Seema to lead their communities toward a brighter tomorrow.
